Applying for the Disabled Driver (or Passenger) Scheme in Ireland


You will need a Primary Medical Cert.

Car Exemption Process

Eligible to swap cars every 2 years.

Once car is adapted can get VRT & VAT back (up to max value of €16,000 – depends on driver v passenger claim and level of adaptation required).

Get VRT at source.

Get VAT back from Revenue afterwards (2-3 weeks).

Stage 1a: Register Car with Revenue.ie (VRT, VAT)
Go to revenue.ie/Disabled Drivers scheme/Drivers & passengers with disabilities.
Fill in the form/send when prompted.
You will need:
● VIN/chassis number of new car
● Garage VAT number and contact details
● CC of new car
● primary medical certificate in electronic format

You will then receive a Vehicle Exemption Notice cert/PDF.
Once you receive that, send this on to the garage.
They can then remove VRT from the sale price.
There can be issues with the Revenue form online – if so call Phone 01 738 3671

Getting the adaption: (eg wheelchair bootstraps)
● Organise with Parfit (or other similar company) – t. 018407880
● Book and pay over phone
● Garage will bring car to get adapted / takes a couple of hours (for a basic adaption)

DONT FORGET TO CHANGE OVER INSURANCE BEFORE CAR COLLECTION

Stage 1b: VAT Claim
Go to Revenue.ie/Disabled Drivers scheme/Drivers & passengers with disabilities.
Fill in VAT return form.

You will need:
● car purchase invoice (with PAID in FULL clearly marked)
● adaption invoice (eg Parfit)
● EU conformity certificate.

Stage 2: Motor Tax exemption
If you are changing car – Motor Tax Office should have your details on file as Revenue will contact them once you register new car.
Motor Tax Office will request your old tax disc back/post to them.
If they don’t contact you – call Motor Tax Office at 01-2228000.

Apply for exemption / change car details/you will need to return old car exemption disc.
motortax@transport.gov.ie for information.

Stage 3: Toll Exemption
Fill in the form online https://dtes.ie/dtes-application-form/
You need your vehicle registration cert

Stage 4: Fuel Allowance/Grant
Apply through the Revenue website.
Nb Keep (scan) a copy of all your fuel receipts.
You can claim this every year.
